Geosciences

Geosciences students investigate earth processes at scales that range from atomic to planetary. Geoscientists integrate and apply a wide range of scientific skills and concepts to examine Earth鈥檚 composition, structure, and processes in order to better understand its past, present, and future. In addition to having the opportunity to have fulfilling and environmentally friendly careers, their rigorous educational experience affords geoscience degree holders with good employability and salary potential. Geoscientists also have the benefit of working in multiple work environments including in the field, laboratories, and the office.

  • Six degree options prepare students for a wide variety of careers in rapidly growing fields. Over the course of the degree, you can specialize in Environmental & Engineering Geology, Earth Science & Society, Geobiology & Paleobiology, Geology, Geochemistry, or Geophysics.

  • Small class sizes taught by world-renowned experts in their disciplines. Many of our courses are taught by scientists engaged in cutting-edge research, ensuring that content is never stale.

  • Exceptional acccess to undergraduate research opportunities, with more than 80% of students graduating in 2026 having undertaken research, including students who published their results and attended national and international conferences.

  • A unique study abroad opportunity: students can opt to participate in a semester-long experience in a VT campus at Switzerland, all taught by our faculty. Fieldwork there includes the Alps, the Dolomites, Cinque Terre, and Naples/Vesuvius, all led by experts.
