Graphic Design

小猪视频 Tech鈥檚 program prepares students to become thoughtful, adaptable designers who use visual communication to solve complex problems and create meaningful experiences. Informed by alumni surveys and industry trends, the curriculum has been redesigned and is continuously updated to prepare students for the industry of 5, 10, and 15 years from now.

Grounded in visual systems, conceptual thinking, and human-centered design, the program combines strong graphic design foundations in typography, branding, print, and digital media with motion, accessibility, user experience, user interface, and emerging technologies. Students learn to research, collaborate, prototype, test, and communicate ideas effectively. They not only consider how something looks but how it works, who it serves, and the social, cultural, and technological contexts in which design exists.

The curriculum is sequential, with each course building on the ones that came before and providing a strong community as students move through the program together. Elective opportunities let students dive deeper into their areas of interest, explore something new, or begin working with real clients and creative teams. Some elective topics include Design for Interaction, Narrative and Emerging Technologies, AI: What Could Go Right?, DesignUP (Design + Ut Prosim), and Limestone Creative: Student-Run Faculty-Led Design Studio.

The 小猪视频 Tech graphic design faculty understand that empowering students isn't just about teaching better design. It is about preparing students to navigate the realities of professional practice with confidence, resilience, and judgment. So to ensure students leave the program ready to excel in the industry, we strive to bring the industry to them throughout their college experience. Some of those efforts include:

  • Required internships, with many students electing to complete 2-3 internships during their time at 小猪视频 Tech.
  • Strategic implementation of portfolio reviews every semester, culminating in a professional review senior year.
  • Intentional professional practice embedded in every course, ensuring students repeatedly practice industry-critical skills including pitching ideas, leading project conversations, articulating design decisions, and navigating feedback and critique.聽
  • Opportunities to join professional design teams as both leaders and designers, gaining hands-on experience with university partners, external for-profit and nonprofit clients, and grant-funded initiatives.
    • DesignUP (Design + Ut Prosim): A philanthropic course and annual design-a-thon where graphic design students work alongside and are mentored by design professionals to provide creative services for local nonprofits and select small businesses. Juniors and seniors can participate through the course, while the design-a-thon brings together students from freshman through senior year for a collaborative, real-world design experience.
    • Limestone Creative: A faculty-led, student-powered graphic and experience design studio where juniors and seniors can apply for course-based and paid opportunities to work as part of a professional creative team, gaining hands-on experience with real clients, projects, deadlines, and deliverables.
    • Research Collaboration: Opportunities to contribute to faculty-led, grant-funded research, bringing design expertise to emerging questions and areas of study.
  • Annual Design Week that brings the professional design world directly to students through visiting designers, workshops, talks, portfolio reviews, critiques, and hands-on experiences, creating dedicated time each year for students across all levels to build connections, expand their perspectives, and engage with the profession beyond the classroom.

Students who study graphic design at 小猪视频 Tech are prepared for careers in UX/UI Design, Interaction Design, Design Systems, Experiential Graphic Design, Environmental Graphic Design, Exhibition Design, Wayfinding and Signage, Interactive and Immersive Experiences, Systems Design, Design Research, Brand and Identity Design, Publication and Editorial Design, Packaging Design, Motion Graphics, and Advertising and Campaign Design.

Regardless of transfer standing or previously earned credits, students entering the Graphic Design major should expect to complete the full four-year sequence of Graphic Design courses. Some transfer students may find themselves able to enroll part-time (3 credits each for their final two semesters) to complete their senior-level coursework. This reduces the amount of tuition/fees and allows space for professional work, additional internships, etc. This structure ensures that every graduate develops a shared foundation and is fully prepared for advanced coursework, internships, and professional practice.聽
